TIPS:

  • Journaling is a powerful form of expression and reflection that is proven to improve our mental health. Get the journaling basics here and eheck out these journaling prompts from our friends at BRWN GRL TALK.
  • Art is another powerful form of expression, but you don’t have to be a skilled artist to enjoy the benefits. Paint, draw, sculpt or grab a coloring book and some crayons. Expressing ourselves creatively helps us recharge and is a great form of self-care.
  • Recess is for everyone! Somewhere along the way, we forget the importance of taking breaks and being playful. When we are busy and overwhelmed, stopping to watch a funny video or relax and listen to music may feel like a waste of time. In reality, these breaks can help us be more productive when we get back to work.

TIPS:

  • Movement is a proven mental health booster. Movement in nature is even better. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, go for a walk outside for 10 or 20 minutes, taking deep breaths along the way while focusing on the world around you.
  • Regular exercise has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Experts recommend 30 minutes of exercise three to five times a week.
  • Our emotional health and physical health are connected and the food we use to fuel our bodies also impacts our mind. Mental Health America put together some tips on foods to embrace and avoid.
  • Visit our Press Pause hub for a variety of free classes for your exercise and self-care routines including yoga for all levels, a dance class and more.

TIPS:

  • Learn the power of Pressing Pause. Whenever we’re feeling overwhelmed with anxiety, stress, anger or another difficult emotion, the first thing we should do is…nothing. Taking a minute or two to let the initial emotional and physical reactions to stress or anxiety fade can help us reset and make better decisions about what to do next. You can find a variety of Press Pause breathing exercises, stretches and movements at www.justpresspause.com.
  • Breathing is one of our most powerful mental health tools. Taking deep breaths helps us find balance and a calmer state. Check out a variety of breathing exercises at www.justpresspause.com.
  • Self-care doesn’t have to be luxurious, expensive or selfish. Self-care is simply the act of carving out time for ourselves and to take care of our mental health. It can be a short meditation, a hobby, a bath, a quiet meal alone, or whatever works for us as individuals.

WEEK 4:

Kindness & connection

EVENTS:

  • May 26 – MAKE YOUR AFFIRMATIONS Workshop at 1 PM ET on YouTube Live. Feel good inside & out with an interactive affirmation session with artist, wellbeing practitioner & educator, L’Oréal McCollum from BEAM.
  • STAY TUNED FOR MORE EVENT ANNOUNCEMENTS!

TIPS:

  • Talking about our difficult feelings is the first step to acknowledging and dealing with them. We hear time and time again from people who were struggling that the simple act of telling someone what they were going through made them feel significantly better. When in doubt, talk to someone about what you’re going through.
  • It can be difficult for friends to tell us they are having a hard time. If you’re worried that a friend or family member may be struggling, trust your instinct. You can find tips for reaching out and starting the conversation at www.seizetheawkward.com.
  • Giving back and helping others has been shown to be a huge mental health boost, especially when it feels like nothing else is working. Doing things for others shifts our thinking to a more positive perspective and makes us feel more connected to the world around us. You can volunteer with a local organization or do random acts of kindness for people in your community!
  • Get ready for a live interactive feel-good affirmation session with L’Oréal McCollum from BEAM.
